Last Updated: 30.03.20

Were you thinking of getting your small friend a hamster ball? Our recent article on this topic should help you out. In fact, hamster toys of any kind are essential for keeping your little pet happy and healthy.

And since we are on the subject of toys, the market really has a lot to offer. The available items are countless, but there are some things you should consider before buying such a product.

Choosing Toys for Your Hamster

Hamsters of any kind are very active creatures. The ones kept in cages need a variety of toys and accessories that will offer exercise activities, exploration, as well as play time. Surely, they appreciate time outside their usual habitat to explore the surrounding environment.

However, there are many types of things you can add inside the cage that will keep your small friend active. Among the items you should include in a hamster cage, we have the exercise wheel and hamster balls.

Chew toys are very important and should be included in any hamster’s cage. In the end, they are rodents and it is vital for them to chew in order to keep their teeth in check. Hopefully, the cage of your hamster is large enough to accommodate a climber and a house or a hut, or both. Climbing blocks and wood ladders are great for these cute creatures.

No matter what toys you offer your pet, you need to make sure they are safe for him or her. First of all, before you buy them check if the item or items in question is intended for hamsters. If not, move on to other products.

Also, the materials used in these toys need to be safe. For example, wooden toys are great; they are durable, offer chewing materials, and can be cleaned quite easily. Still, you should keep your pet away from cedar or pine.

Plastic is not the best choice for a rodent, but there are various types that are safe to use. The dye can also cause problems. Unless natural vegetable dye was used, we suggest you search for something else.

Other things to consider when it comes to hamster toys are to check them regularly. Make sure that they are not too worn, or that they have not broken. Sharp edges can be dangerous for your pet, so if you notice such situations, please throw them away.

Manufacturing Toys Yourself

Nowadays it is very easy to create a lot of things. Jewelry, various fashion accessories, toys, and so many more – you will literally find tons of tutorials online. If you are skillful and passionate about creating things with your hands, you will probably want to make hamster toys yourself.

Moreover, you do not have to track down a fancy toy for your rodent friend to have an opportunity to play and explore. Many hamster toys can be produced using disposable household supplies.

For example, just a few pieces of cardboard or wood are enough to make box hideouts, climbing platforms, or treat holders for any playpen or cage. Make sure you choose non-toxic paint and other pet-safe decorations and you can provide your hamster with colorful and fun new toys.

Further on, we will offer you a few suggestions that you can use to make toys for your little friend.

Toilet Paper Roll Toy

Anyone has paper rolls in their homes, right? The first step is to trim one to the size you consider appropriate. If the cage is large enough, you can even skip this step. You can use a utility knife or scissors to cut the cardboard tube to size. Make sure you trim the ends evenly and remove any damaged or frayed portions.

Toilet paper rolls are typically short and work great as a base toy. Most of them do not even need to be trimmed. In case you do not have any at hand, you can also use a paper towel roll and trim it to the size you need. It works the same.

The second step is to cut small holes in the paper roll using a utility knife. Scissors also work but it is a bit more complicated. You should cut about four or five circles along the tube’s length. Make sure you space them out in order to retain the shape of the tube.

Imagine that the holes are similar to windows your pet can use to see treats and also remove them without having to chew through the cardboard. The holes should be the size of your hamster’s head.

This way, he or she will be able to reach the seeds with ease and will not get stuck when crawling into the tube. You can also make the holes a bit larger but this may cause the toy to break apart faster.

To make the toy even more beautiful, you can wrap the tube in non-toxic colored paper and make the holes to match those from the tube. The paper should be longer than the tube as you will need to be able to close the ends.

The next step is gluing the paper covering to the tube using non-toxic glue. You will need to let the glue cure for 24 hours. Afterward, place your pet’s favorite treats in the roll. You can use sunflower seeds or fruits and vegetables like berries, apple, spinach, or lettuce. Last, tie the paper around the tissue roll with twine, and your hamster toy is ready to be used!

Cardboard Box Toy

First, take a cardboard box and trim the flaps off using scissors or a utility knife. Unfold the box, lay it flat, and peel off any tape that may be holding the flaps in place. Further on, remove the flaps as that your pet has enough space to move through the box. The toy should be made out of plain cardboard, and tissue boxes or other types of cardboard with ink should be avoided.

Next, cut holes in the middle of the box in order to create entrance points. You can make a hole in the middle of each panel. Also, each hole can have a different shape than the other. Moreover, the holes should be large enough for your hamster to be able to get in and out.

Moving on, decorate the box with non-toxic wrapping paper which you need to glue using non-toxic glue. After the glue is dry, cut the paper to the shape of the holes already made in the box. The toy is now ready to offer your little friend some exploring activities.

Making a Platform

You can easily create a platform by using flat cardboard and five or six cardboard paper rolls for support. After you measure the available space and cut the cardboard to the size you need, simply glue the paper rolls to the cardboard, using non-toxic glue.

It is important to let the glue dry completely so that the platform will be as stable as possible. Then, simply place the new toy in the cage and secure it to the wall as needed. You can even color the platform or add pet-safe decorations if you want to customize it.

These are just a few simple ideas to make your hamster some toys. Depending on your possibilities, time, and skills you can use other materials such as wood to create various fun toys for your small friend.
