How Much Does It Cost to Have a Hamster?

Last Updated: 30.03.20

In the wild, hamsters like to dig burrows, and that is why it is very important to equip their habitat with hamster tunnels and tubes. Also, healthy bedding for a hamster shouldn’t contain inks, dyes, or chemicals – it will satisfy his/her need to burrow without affecting his/her health.

It is true that there are many supplies that can make your pet rodent’s life more interesting and enjoyable. Also, your little friend has other needs that you should consider, like a proper cage that offers him/her enough space and comfort. And, if you want to entertain your pet, there are plenty of toys available out there. So, how much does it cost to have a hamster?

It is only normal to have higher expenses in the beginning, but once you have bought the most important products, the costs per month are quite low. Dr. Jennifer Quammen, who is a veterinarian at Grants Lick Veterinary Hospital in Kentucky, says that people who decide to adopt a hamster should be prepared to spend as much as $200 on main supplies.

Where your hamster lives is extremely important, and that is why choosing a cage that offers him/her enough space and comfort is mandatory. The good thing is that there is a wide selection of hamster habitats on the market in order to satisfy everybody’s necessities.

And, the cage might be the largest expense that you will have, so don’t get scared by the prices. The price range is anywhere between $10 for a small plastic one and up to $100 for one that is larger and is made of metal or wood.

A habitat that is 24” x 12”, for example, can be found for an average price of $49.29. If you want your pet rodent to live a healthy and happy life, it is ok for the habitat to be bigger, but not smaller.

Your hamster needs safe and comfortable bedding that will satisfy his/her need for digging without affecting his/her health. So, the bedding material is something that you should pay extra attention to. There are many varieties on the market and the prices vary depending on the type you choose.

You may opt for the basic ones or for those that are scented, and the cost should be anywhere between $2 and $10. The proper bedding will absorb odor, will allow your pet to hide in, and it will be used by your hamster as his/her toilet place, too. The bedding should be replaced weekly, in order to keep your pet’s habitat smelling nice and fresh.

The most inexpensive option will be the paper bedding, and your hamsters will love it. And the best part about it is that you can do it yourself – you just need to rip small pieces of unscented toilet paper and put it in your little friend’s habitat.

Food and dish

It is a very good idea to have a dish where to put food for your little animal. And, when you buy it, make sure you choose one that is made from ceramic, and not from wood or plastic. Since your hamster’s teeth never stop growing, they have the strong need to chew on various things. And, their food dish might be something that they will use to satisfy that need.

A bowl that is made from ceramic should only cost up to a maximum of $10, and you will have it for a long time because hamsters will not be able to chew on it. And, if you can’t afford to buy a container for food at the moment, you can temporarily sprinkle food on the floor. Also, another expense that you should include in your budget is your pet’s food.

There are plenty of different mixes of hamster food available at your local pet shop, and they aren’t expensive at all. They should cost anywhere between $2.5 to $5 and should be given to your pet on a regular basis. Another option would be to buy pelleted foods that vary between $3.99 and $12.99 per bag and can last for four to six weeks.

Veterinary visits

You want your hamster to be with you for as long as possible, and that is why you need to take proper care of him/her. Hamsters are sensitive little creatures that can experience respiratory issues, problems with their teeth, or diarrhoeal diseases. This means that it is very important to find a good veterinarian that will help them stay healthy and strong.

Also, it is recommended that you examine your small animal soon after adopting him/her and then every year. These visits to the veterinary range from $30 to $70, depending on the area you live in and the purpose of your visit. Also, you have to take into account that if your pet gets sick you might have to spend some money on medication, like pet antibiotics.

To be a little more specific, we can say that a regular visit to an animal clinic might cost about $65. But, as we have already mentioned, it depends, and if additional tests are required you might end up paying more than that.

Hammies need to exercise in order to stay healthy and happy, and that is why you should buy some toys for him/her that will with that. Also, your little pet can grow bored and there are certain toys that are meant to keep him/her entertained and occupied. You can find plenty of these products on the market and their price ranges from $1.2 to $30.

While some are mandatory, like a wheel which can be bought for $3 to $5, some are just optional and it is up to you if you want to buy them or not. Also, these toys can always be purchased down the road so you don’t have to spend too much at once. Or, you can make them yourself.

Old toilet rolls, for example, can keep your little friend busy. So, instead of throwing them away, just place them in your pet’s cage for him/her to crawl through. Your hamster will also appreciate if you offer some toys he/she can chew on in order to keep his/her teeth short and healthy.
