How Much Does It Cost to Have a Guinea Pig?

Last Updated: 26.02.20

You will need lots of things to keep your guinea pig entertained if you want to have one, and amongst these, you will have to get some guinea pig accessories. But that’s not the only thing that will impact your costs, as you’ll also have to get a cage for a guinea pig, complete with a food bowl and water bottle. Here are the costs of having a guinea pig.

Starting costs

Of course, you will first need to take into consideration the cost of the guinea pig itself, and usually, that should be between $10 and $40, depending on where you buy it from. It’s even better for the animal and yourself if you get it from a rescue center or a humane society.

The alternative is to buy it from a pet store, but you can also find ads online and people willing to sell newborns. Some people also want to move or for various reasons they can’t have a guinea pig anymore so they want to give it up for adoption.

The next item on your list is the cage where the guinea pig will stay. Because you don’t want your pet to have a cramped life, you need a cage that is at least 7.5 square feet, so you’ll be looking at cages that are at least 36 by 30 inches.

Cages vary a lot in terms of price, depending on their size, the materials they are made of, and the number of ramps they come with, so you can get a cage somewhere between $25 and $300. This cage also needs to come with different accessories to make your pet’s life better. And if it doesn’t, you will have to purchase them separately.

A water bottle is essential for your guinea pig, as you don’t want water to stand in the open air and get bacteria in it. The bottle should be easy to attach to the cage and the pet should have an easy time drinking from it. If you won’t have that much time to fill your pet’s water bottle too often, you will have to get a bigger one, and those cost a bit more.

But you should be able to find a water bottle for a sum between $5 and $25. Along with that, the guinea pig also needs a food bowl, and the best option, in this case, is a bowl that sticks to the floor, so the pet can’t tip it over.

Hanging feeders are also a great choice because they make it impossible for the pig to sleep on them or tip the food over. You can find feeders or food bowls for about $6 to $20, or you might be lucky enough to have a cage that already has a bowl in it.

Regular costs

Although you have everything you need for your guinea pig from the start, you will have to spend some money every month to make your pet’s life a good one. Amongst these monthly costs, you need to consider the bedding and how often you have to change it.

There are many options when it comes to bedding and each guinea pig has its preferences. Some guinea pigs love sleeping on the bare floor of their cage, but others are more pretentious. You can start by using some inexpensive wood shavings and progress from that. The price for bedding can range between $7 and $50 but the quantity and usage time varies a lot.

Because grass hay makes up to about 75% of the guinea pig’s diet, it’s a really important thing to buy. Having it in their cage at all times is important for their teeth, as they need to chew on it, but also for the nutrients found in it. Depending on the brand and quality you will pay between $5 and $35 or even more.

You can also choose to give the guinea pig pellet food. And you should make sure it’s specially made for them and it contains Vitamin C, as your guinea pig needs that. High-quality food is a must for the health of your pet, so a bag of pellets is about $8 – $25.

There are certain things that you can buy to make your pet’s life a more comfortable one but they aren’t really mandatory. Amongst these, the chew sticks can be used by your guinea pig to prevent its teeth from overgrowing. Ranging in prices from $5 to $15, chew sticks should last for a long while, so you won’t have to spend too much on them.

Toys ensure that the guinea pig doesn’t get bored, especially because it’s an animal that needs constant attention and playtime. If you want to save some money, you can make use of household items like toilet paper rolls. But if you decide to get a toy from some store, its price will usually be between $2 and $20.

Because guinea pigs have long hair, they require some grooming supplies if you want to keep them looking great. You can get various items to help with that, including different nail clippers or special shampoo that is safe for your pet. If you decide to get such an item you will spend about $5 on it.

Visiting the vet

Unfortunately, your guinea pig will sometimes need the help of a veterinarian and paying a visit to one will be quite expensive. It’s good to visit a vet when you first get the guinea pig, to make sure everything is right. Besides that, you will have to go to the veterinarian yearly for checkups.

Depending on where you live, the costs can vary, but you should expect to pay about $50 for such a visit, per pig. Because the guinea pig is an exotic animal, general veterinarians don’t treat their illnesses so you will have to find a specialized person for that. The costs of helping your pet overcome health issues can range from $250 to $500 depending on the illness.

You can also opt to insure your pets using an exotic pet insurance policy, and if you decide to do that, the cost is around $10 per month. Depending on the age of your guinea pig and the health issues it has, the cost may rise.
